Self Meditation
In today's society we find ourselves living ever more hectic lives, continuing to tax ourselves both physically and mentally. If we push our bodies too far we take the time to rest and recuperate, why is it then that we rarely allow our minds the rest they need.
Just as it is important to take care of our bodies, it is just as important to take care of our minds, you may be surprised to discover exactly how self meditation can improve your lifestyle and help you to cope with the increasing stresses of day to day life. Self meditation has proven benefits including decreased feelings of anxiety, improving concentration and providing a general sense of well being. With focused self meditation you can learn to overcome those powerful negative emotions that may be hindering your life, perhaps you suffer from a fear of public speaking or have an irrational fear of heights, with self meditation you can learn to be the master of your mind and not allow it to be the master of you. There are a number of physical problems such things as anxiety can cause, if you have ever found yourself incredibly anxious about something before which no doubt you have, then you know full well the affects this can have. With practiced self meditation you can help avoid these.
You may feel you do not have enough spare time to meditate each day, this is simply not true. When you learn how to self meditate it can take as little as 15 minutes a day to just spend some time refocusing your mind and overcoming any stresses you may be feeling. Allowing you to concentrate on whatever it is you need to and get on with your day in a productive manner not letting negative feelings build up and overpower you. This is perfect for stressful lives; it applies to each and every one of us, from a business man about to give an important presentation to a new mother feeling overcome by the responsibility of taking care of their child, even a student worrying about a deadline and feeling suffocated by their workload.
The word meditation will usually produce religious images of monks contemplating the meaning of life and finding their center in a monastery somewhere, the truth is that self meditation has real world applications and can help everybody cope in their modern lives. Successful meditation will have notable physical side effects, your blood pressure will drop, muscles will lose their tension, your temperature can even drop while your body will require less oxygen and even your brain waves will alter from hectic beta waves to relaxed alpha waves.
When you first begin to learn self meditation it is important you make enough time to spend around two 30 minute sessions a day training yourself to focus your mind, when you become adept at self meditation there will be no reason you cannot reach a state of peace for a quick 10 minutes when and if required.
There are four important aspects to learning how to self meditate, the first is to pick a calm quiet place, you may wish to light some candles and turn down the lights, try to find a room that has as little ambient noise as possible. Secondly you need to learn the correct posture, you do not need to sit cross legged with your hands at your side as seen in most Buddhist pictures simply find a comfortable seat with your back straight and your head balanced, you can lie down if you wish but be careful not to fall asleep! Once you are in a quiet room sitting in a comfortable manner with your spine straight the next step is to focus on your breathing. Start with a few deep breaths, breathe in deeply through your nose and then out through your mouth, do this several times and then try to breathe normally. Lastly you need to empty your mind, you can do this in several ways, you may wish to focus on an object in the room perhaps a candle for example, half close your eyes and focus on this object. Your mind will wander and when it does try to bring it back to the object, you can focus on your breathing by counting from one to ten and then starting again, the idea is to empty your mind and just be at peace. Self meditation is not easy and nobody will tell you that it is, it requires a lot of practice but is definitely worth the effort.
It is easy to lose patience when learning how to self meditate however it is important you keep trying. It is surprisingly difficult to think about nothing. Start with 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening each day until you reach a point when you can focus your mind whenever you wish. The health benefits of self meditation are well documented so it is in your best interest to maintain discipline in your efforts to learn.
